    Artisanal fishing is very significant in Ecuador and Puerto Cayo because it is both a relavent activity for its residents and because it creates jobs directly and indirectly.  State institutions and organizations have supported international economic support projects and programs to improve the value chain of the fishing industry in Puerto Cayo and the adoption of sustainable fisheries.  Fishing and related industries are trained in activities to strengthen the organizational structure and administration for better effectiveness, including the active involvement of stakeholders and strategic partners to obtain results the benefit end consumers as well as the artisanal fishermen.  Fishing species present in Puerto Cayo include shrimp, lobster, chur, sardines, mackerel, sea bass, albacore, snapper, wahoo, and grouper, amoung others.
